工作后进一步深造有什么坏处？说实在的，我想不到有什么太大的坏处。但是好处呢？其中最大一个好处就是节约了大量时间、精力和金钱，因为可能你很快会发现，你没有多大兴趣或欲望将目前的专业作为未来职业。先工作能更好地了解到自己想要什么，以防今后走上一条不适合你的职业道路。因为作为猎头公司的CEO，在多年的工作中，我观察到以下几件事。

　　

身为大学生的你，能不能成熟决定未来的职业方向？

　　

今年早些时候，我在上海向一群研究生发表了一场职业发展演讲。演讲结束后，有个人找到我，说他以后想从事和专业不同的工作。因为在研究生阶段，他发现自己没有兴趣把这份专业当职业。他这种现象并不少见。我碰见过许多研究生，他们发现目前的专业和当初所想的很不一样，没当初想的那么有趣，回报也没那么大。

　　

我也看过无数候选人的简历，他们研究生毕业于工程、金融、财务、计算机、供应链等专业，可简历上没有一份工作与他们的专业相关。他们的研究生学位和目前工作联系不大，甚至完全没有联系。尽管说学习总有收获，但花这么多年拿下研究生学位，最后却完全排不上用场，这个代价太大了。

　　

然而，这些人其实很幸运，因为他们在研究生阶段，或者是研究生刚毕业时，就早早地认识到自身情况，决定采取行动。

　　

选择不适合你的职业，代价颇高

　　

最近，我还碰到一个向我咨询职业建议的人，说想换个职业。他32岁了，对自己的工作也很拿手，可就是不喜欢这份工作。我问他是什么时候有这种感受的，他说已经很久了。我又问他，那为什么还在做这份工作，他的回答很常见。

　　

研究生毕业后，他自然而然地进入了现在这个领域。但等开始工作，他发现自己对这条路并不感兴趣。可是他已经投入了这么多时间和金钱，完全转行对他来说难度不小。但现在，他想告别浑浑噩噩的状态。许多人出于类似的原因拖了很长时间，直到为时已晚，深陷桎梏。

　　

并不是说先工作后深造的人就没这种问题，但他们身上出现这个问题的几率要小得多。先工作做感兴趣的事可以提高你对自身和这份职业的了解和意识。因此，先工作的人在选择深造方向时，能做出更好的决定。因为他们的决定基于实际经验，观点看法也更成熟，更真实。就算你只工作一两年，对未来目标职业的感受也会更强，更清晰。

　　

选择深造方向时，该考虑哪些因素？

　　

有多少人本科毕业后直接读研究生，主要是因为他们不知道毕业后该从事哪种工作或职业？在中国我碰到过许多人，毕业后想做些和专业不一样的事情。要是问他们“为什么一开始读了这个专业的硕士？”，他们的回答都差不多——“就算我现在不知道该做什么，但至少两年后我能有个研究生学位。这在求职中很有优势，对吧？”

　　

还有一些人只是因为别人（尤其是父母）希望他们继续读书。国内许多人认为，学历越高，未来前景越好，职业稳定性和社会尊重度也越高。

　　

这是事实。在许多情况下，一个研究生学历确实能帮你赢得这些东西。但再次提醒，你真的希望从事这份职业吗？不喜欢、不适合的职业最终会让你自食恶果。许多人之所以不开心、没有动力、普普通通，最大原因是他们不喜欢目前的工作，或不在乎自己在这份工作上表现得好不好。

　　

当然，许多人继续深造，是因为他们清楚知道自己以后想做什么。我妹夫就是这样。早在高中时，他就知道自己以后相当医生。所以他大学毕业后直接去了医学院，此后就一直以此为生。我还有朋友大学毕业后直接去了法学院，多年后，他们依然从事着同样的行业。但我碰到的许多本科直接读研究生的人，最后在专业领域的工作时间都不长。

　　

先工作还有三大好处：

　　

你会在研究生阶段投入更多——先工作几年再念书，专注度和目标感会高得多。拿我自己来说，我读本科的时候就不够成熟，对什么都无所谓。如果我毕业直接去深造，可能不会有太大改变。但我工作了五年后再去读MBA，那时的我不再孩子气。对待职业更加认真、专注，比本科的时候目标更明确。所以在MBA项目中，我的努力程度和目标感是本科的三倍。那时的我更重视所有事情。

　　

你会在研究生阶段收获更多——一流MBA项目需要你在参加项目前至少有四五年工作经验，因为他们希望你有参考经验，在互动课程和案例研究讨论时能更充分地参与其中，更了解话题内容。没有任何可以借鉴的经验，对讨论的贡献有限，收获也有限。

　　

你在研究生阶段的经济压力会小很多——本科毕业后直接读研，很有可能在读书时还得兼职打工。但这时你的主要目标应该是学习，从研究生学习中尽可能有最大收获。由于我在读商学院前已经有了5年经验，在读MBA时我没有经济压力。本科毕业直接读研的人可能会面临不同的情形。

　　

如果对你来说，时间和金钱不那么重要，或你有非常清晰的未来职业打算，那本科毕业后就直接去读研。否则，就先工作，因为与在一开始充满不确定性和压力，事后后悔相比，这样的职业起点会更扎实。

Similarly,I’vealsoseencountlessresumesofcandidateswithgraduatedegreesinengineering,finance,computerscience,supplychain,etc.,whohaveneverspentasingledayintheseprofessions.Theirgraduatedegreehaslittle,ifnothingatall,todowithwhatthey’redoingnow.Whileeverythingyoulearnbenefitsyou,gettingagraduatedegreeinsomethingyouneverendupusingisacostlywaytoknowatopicwell.

　　

Butthesepeopleareactuallytheluckyones.Theyrecognizetheirsituationanddosomethingaboutitveryearlyon,eitherduringorrightaftertheirgraduatestudies.

　　

Thecostofmakingcareerchoicesthatdon’tfityou

　　

Imetanotherguyrecentlywhowasseekingmycareeradvice.Hewantedtochangehiscareer.Hewas32yearsoldandgoodatwhathedid.Buthesimplydidn’tenjoyit.WhenIaskedhimwhenherealizedthis,hesaidhe’sfeltthiswayforalongtime.WhenIaskedwhyhe’sstilldoingwhathe’sdoingthen,hesaidwhatI’veheardmanysay.

　　

Heenteredhisfieldthroughhisgraduatestudiesrightafteruniversity.Oncehebeganworkingthough,herealizeditwasn’twhathewasinterestedin.Butbecauseofallthetimeandmoneyhe’dinvestedintoit,it’sbeenhardforhimtoconsideracompletecareerchange.Now,however,henolongerwantstofeelunmotivatedandunhappyinhiscareer.Formanypeople,theywaittoolongforsimilarreasons,untilachangeistoodifficultandtheyfeeltrapped.

　　

I’mnotsayingthatthisdoesn’thappentopeoplewhoworkbeforetheypursueagraduatedegree.Butithappenslessoften.Workingfirstandtryingsomethingthatyou’reinterestedinraisesyourunderstandingandawarenessofbothyourselfandwhatthatprofessionisabout.That’swhypeoplewhoworkfirstmakebetterdecisionsaboutthegraduatedegreetheypursue.Becauseit’sbasedontheiractualexperienceandamoremature,realworldperspective.Evenifyouworkjust1-2yearsfirst,yoursenseofwhatyoureallywanttopursueinyourcareerwillbestrongerandclearer.

　　

Whatisyourdecisiontopursuethegraduatedegreeyouchoosebasedon?

　　

Whereas,howmanypeopledoyouknowwhowenttograduateschoolrightafteruniversity,mainlybecausetheydidn’tknowwhatkindofjoborcareertopursueaftergraduating?I’vemetmanyofthemlateronwhenthey’retryingtopursuesomethingelse.Askthem,“WhydidyoutogetaMastersinthisinthefirstplace,”andtheiranswersaresimilar.Becausetheythoughttothemselves,“EvenifIdon’treallyknowwhatIwanttodonow,atleastI’llhaveagraduatedegreeintwoyears.Thatshouldattractfutureemployers,right?”

　　

Manyjustdidwhatothersexpectedthemtodo,especiallytheirparents.TomanypeopleinChina,highereducationequatestobetterfutureprospects,careerstability,andrespectability.Sohowcanyougowrong?

　　

That’strue.Inmanycases,agraduatedegreedoeshelpyouattainthesethings.Butagain,isitinacareertrackthatyouhaveanyrealdesirepursue?Becausethateventuallycatchesupwithyou.Thebiggestreasonwhymanypeopleareunhappy,unmotivated,orlesssuccessfulisbecausethey’redoingsomethingtheydon’tenjoyorcaretobecomereallygoodat.

　　

Ofcourse,manypeoplepursueanadvanceddegreebecausetheyknowclearlywhattheywanttodofortheircareer.Mybrother-in-lawisagoodexample.Whenhewasinhighschooleven,heknewhewantedtobecomeadoctorsomeday.Sohewenttomedicalschoolrightafterhisuniversity.It’sbeenhisprofessioneversince.Ialsohavefriendswhowentstraighttolawschoolaftercollege.OthersIknowgotgraduatedegreesinpublichealth,humanresources,andmarketingrightaftergraduating.They’restillintheseprofessionsmanyyearslater.ButforeveryexampleIcanthinkof,Iknowsomanymorewhogotadvanceddegreesdirectlyoutofuniversityinafieldtheydidn’tpursueforverylong.

　　

Bytheway,herearethreemorebigadvantagesofworkingfirst.

　　

You’llputmuchmoreintoyourgraduatestudies–Yourfocusandpurposewillallbemuchhigherifyouworkafewyearsfirst.Inmycase,Iwasanimmature,carefreeuniversitystudent.Thatwouldn’thavechangedifIwentstraighttograduateschool?ButafterworkingforfiveyearsandthengoingtogetanMBA,IwasmuchmoreseriousaboutmycareerandwhatIwantedtodo.Iwasn’takidanymore.SowhileinmyMBAprogram,Iwas3xmorehardworking,focused,andpurposefulthanIwasasanundergraduate.Everythingmatteredmuchmoretomethen.

　　

You’llgetmuchmoreoutofyourgraduatestudies-ThisiswhytopMBAprogramswantyoutohaveatleast4-5yearsofworkexperiencebeforeattendingtheirprogram.Theywantyoutohaveexperiencestoreferencesoyoucanparticipatemoreandbetterunderstandwhat’sbeingtalkedaboutintheinteractiveclassroomandcasestudydiscussions.Withoutanyworkexperiencetodrawfrom,whatyouhaveto左边offer右边tothesediscussionsislimited.Andthatreducesyourlearningexperience.

　　

You’llhavelessfinancialpressureduringyourgraduatestudies–Gotograduateschoolrightafteruniversityandyou’relikelytohavetoworkpart-timewhilestudying.That’snotthebestsituationwhenyourmainpurposeistolearnandgetthemostoutofyourgraduateschoolexperience.BecauseIworkedfiveyearsbeforeattendingbusinessschool,Ididn’tfeelanyfinancialpressurewhilegettingmyMBA.Idon’tthinkmostpeoplewhogostraightfromuniversitytograduateschoolcansaythesame.

　　

Soiftimeandmoneyaren’timportanttoyou,orifyou’reveryclearaboutwhatyouwanttopursueforyourcareer,thengoforit.Pursueyourgraduatedegreestraightfromyouruniversity.Butifneitherofthesedescribeyoursituation,thenworkforawhilefirst.Becausethiswillhelpgetyourcareerofftoamoresolidstart,ratherthanstartingitoutwithalotofuncertainty,pressure,andregretlateron.
